Journey of Heslaa Tea, to your Cup
Plucking
The journey of Heslaa Tea begins with the plucking process. Expert tea pluckers
carefully and selectively hand-pick the tea leaves as two leaves and a bud, three leaves and bud, and immature banji. The leaves are then carefully stored in boxes until they reach the factory to ensure their freshness and quality.
Rolling
Once the leaves are withered, they move on to the rolling stage. During this process, the leaves are rolled and twisted to break their cell walls, releasing essential oils and juices. This step is crucial for shaping the leaves and initiating the natural chemical reactions that will develop the tea’s unique flavor profile.
Withering
Freshly plucked tea leaves are spread out on large withering Trough and left to wither for 8 to 12 hours. This step reduces the moisture content in the leaves and prepares them for the rolling process. It also allows the leaves to develop the initial flavors that contribute to the final taste of the tea.
Fermentation (Oxidation)
After rolling, the leaves undergo fermentation, also known as oxidation. This process involves spreading the rolled leaves into a cool, humid environment. The oxidation process transforms the color of the leaves from green to coppery-brown and enhances the tea’s aroma and flavor. The duration of oxidation is carefully monitored to achieve
the desired taste.
Drying
Following fermentation, the leaves are subjected to the drying process. This step
involves drying the leaves using hot air to halt the oxidation process and lock in the flavors. Drying reduces the moisture content further and ensures the leaves are ready for storage and packaging. The result is a rich, aromatic tea with a long shelf life.
Grading
Once the tea leaves are dried, they are graded based on their size and quality. The grading process involves sorting the leaves into different categories, ensuring consistency and quality in each batch. This step is vital for maintaining the high standards that Heslaa Tea is
known for.
